Psalm 144   (ESV)

My Rock and My Fortress

Of David.

Blessed be the Lord, my rock,
    who trains my hands for war,
    and my fingers for battle;

I once had a piano teacher who would quote this verse at difficult musical passages!

he is my steadfast love and my fortress,
    my stronghold and my deliverer,
my shield and he in whom I take refuge,
    who subdues peoples under me.

O Lord, what is man that you regard him,
    or the son of man that you think of him?
Man is like a breath;
    his days are like a passing shadow.

Bow your heavens, O Lord, and come down!
    Touch the mountains so that they smoke!
Flash forth the lightning and scatter them;
    send out your arrows and rout them!
Stretch out your hand from on high;
    rescue me and deliver me from the many waters,
    from the hand of foreigners,
whose mouths speak lies
    and whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.

I will sing a new song to you, O God;
    upon a ten-stringed harp I will play to you,

Nehemiah 11:22 — Of the sons of Asaph, the singers were over the business of the house of God.

Psalm 144:9 — I will sing a new song unto Thee, O God.

Ephesians 5:19 — Speaking to yourselves in songs and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.

Colossians 3:16 — Singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Singing people do practical work.  The singers were over the business of the house of God.  You who are being busy all day long about common things for love of Him, isn’t it good to know that you are singers and He is listening to your song?  You new song?

There is always something new to sing about.  God’s singers are the happiest people in all the world.  Even when they can’t sing so that others hear, it doesn’t matter.  We can be happy just to sing and make melody in our heart to the Lord.

The Lord give us grace in our hearts so that we may be His singers today.

10 who gives victory to kings,
    who rescues David his servant from the cruel sword.
11 Rescue me and deliver me
    from the hand of foreigners,
whose mouths speak lies
    and whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.

12 May our sons in their youth
    be like plants full grown,
our daughters like corner pillars
    cut for the structure of a palace;

Ps144 S and S

We have a wedding coming up in our family — son Sean will soon marry Shauna next week in a vineyard in California.  This verse makes me think of them!  And the remainder of the passage is a blessing not only for them, but for all of us who are loving the adults that our children have grown up to be.

13 may our granaries be full,
    providing all kinds of produce;
may our sheep bring forth thousands
    and ten thousands in our fields;
14 may our cattle be heavy with young,
    suffering no mishap or failure in bearing;
may there be no cry of distress in our streets!
15 Blessed are the people to whom such blessings fall!
    Blessed are the people whose God is the Lord!

I am in the mood for piano music, having spent my own countless hours over the years struggling with difficult passages!  HERE  is Chopin’s Nocturne in E Flat Major, Op. 9, No. 2.  The pianist is Valentina Lisitsa, a Ukrainian-born and trained classical pianist who resides in North Carolina.  Her hands and fingers have been wonderfully trained!
